CalArts was founded in 1907 by Frederick Meyer to provide artists and designers with an educational platform that integrates theory and artistic practice, and Meyer's vision continues to this day.

The Arts and Crafts movement began in Europe in the late 19th century in response to the industrial aesthetics of the Machine Age. Frederick Mayer, a boxmaker in his native Germany, was already involved in the sport when he came to live in the Bay Area in 1902. He established a cabinet shop and taught crafts at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art.

The 1906 San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fire destroyed Mel's store and college. At a craft club meeting after the disaster, Meyer articulated his dream of a school that would fuse the artist's practical and aspirational goals.

In 1907 in Berkeley, California, Meyer founded the predecessor of the California Institute of the Arts: the School of the California Guild of Arts and Crafts. The school started with just $45 in cash, 43 students, three classrooms, and only three teachers: Mel himself, ceramicist Rosa Taussig, and artist Perham W. Nahl. Mel's wife, Laetitia, fully supported her husband's cause, serving as the school's secretary. Talented designer Isabelle Percy West also joined the faculty that fall.

In 1922, Mayer purchased the four-acre James Treadwell Estate at Broadway & College Ave, Oakland, CA. Students, faculty, alumni and the Mel family initially spent four years transforming the dilapidated buildings and grounds into a university campus, and after several renovations and renovations over a century, it eventually became CCA's Oakland campus.
