Manchester Metropolitan University diploma picture, Manchester City University Diploma, over 30 years in the late 20th century, Manchester Metropolitan University experienced amalgamation of colleges, some of which were established in the 19th century. Plans to merge began on 1 January 1970, when Manchester College consisted of the Manchester School of Art and Design, Manchester Business School and the John Dalton Institute of Technology. On January 1, 1977, the Junior College merged with Debry School of Education and Hollins College, and on January 1, 1983, it joined Manchester Higher Metropolitan College.
Originally a sovereign institution, the college was transformed into a corporate body on 1 April 1989 under the Education Reform Act 1988. It was later upgraded to a university in 1992 under the Continuing Education and Higher Education Act. Its official name is Manchester Metropolitan University. The school's new name was adopted by the British Privy Council on 15 September 1992.
At this time, the scale of the school continued to expand, and on October 2, 1992, it was merged into the Kruyan Alsag Institute of Higher Education. In 2003, the Manchester School of Physiotherapy was renamed the School of Social Care and Wellness. As for Alsager's original site, the land has been sold and the proceeds go to fund the development of the new school in Crewe.
