Harvard University is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. It was established in 1636 and was first established by the local legislature of Massachusetts. It was initially named "new citizen College". In order to commemorate the Reverend John Harvard who gave generous support to the college in its early days, the school was renamed "Harvard College" in March 1639, and Harvard College was officially renamed "Harvard University" in 1780. Harvard University is composed of ten colleges and one Institute of higher learning. It sits on the largest university library system in the world. In 2018, it registered more than 6699 undergraduates and more than 13120 masters and doctoral students.
